Carl Gustav AMBLING (Nuremberg 1651 - Munich 1701) "Mercurius" Original etching signed in plate on the bottom right, from a drawing by Johachim von Sandrart from the collection entitled "Der Teutsche Academie" or "The German Academy of 'Architecture, Sculpture & Painting ”published in Nuremberg in 1675-79. Nice copy printed on laid paper, with good margins beyond the imprint of the slab, slightly burnished and with some traces of touches on the bottom right corner and a tiny hole but overall in excellent general condition. Painter, engraver and art history scholar, Sandrart also had Aegidius Sadeler among his masters during a youthful stay in Prague. Driven by various family and professional events, he traveled extensively through Europe making himself appreciated by the Sovereigns and High Prelates who commissioned him numerous works; in London he met Charles I and during the years of his important Roman stay he was employed by Cardinal Barberini and Prince Giustiniani. On his return to Germany he retired to Nuremberg where he founded an academy and published various works of art history resulting from a life of passionate scholar and collector. The Teutsche Academie is the most significant evidence of this. Bibliography: Nagler "Neues Allgemeines Kunstle
